Google scores more cloud customer wins with Home Depot and Symphony

The new cloud customers keep piling up for Google LLC, and today it’s the turn of The Home Depot Inc., which has announced it will extend an existing partnership with Google Cloud to use more of its cloud computing infrastucture and services.

Just a day earlier, Symphony Communications Services LLC, which provides a communications platform for the financial services industry, announced it had chosen Google as its primary cloud provider. That company is planning to migrate its entire platform onto Google Cloud.

Home Depot said it’s planning some big things in the wake of its decision to further its relationship with Google Cloud. The retailer already taps Google services such as its compute and storage infrastructure, artificial intelligence, machine learning and data analytics tools to enrich customer experiences. For example, Google powers its newly launched “Rent Online, Pick Up In Store” reservation service for equipment rental that’s available through Home Depot mobile applications.

The company also revealed that Google Cloud helped it deal with an unprecedented surge in demand from online shoppers in 2020, when it saw 86% growth in its digital sales amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

“To provide our customers with the flexibility to shop whenever and however they want, we’ve been intensely focused on building an innovative foundation for our systems and applications,” said Home Depot Chief Information Officer Matt Carey. “We’ve built on Google Cloud since 2015, giving us the scalability and flexibility we need to meet growing demand and quickly introduce more personalized experiences for customers.”

Looking ahead, Home Depot said it will work with Google Cloud to expand its digital transformation in order to provide its customers with more enhanced shopping experiences that blend both the digital and the physical worlds.

As for Symphony, it said its choice to migrate to Google Cloud was driven partly by its need to ensure compliance with the highly regulated financial services industry in which it works. Symphony claims to work with more than 1,000 top financial services firms across the globe.

Symphony Chief Executive Brad Levy said his company’s choice of cloud provider is a big decision, because the security and compliance its platform offers been key to getting numerous financial institutions to adopt cloud infrastructure.

“Our choice of Google Cloud at this stage in Symphony’s journey confirms our confidence in their architecture, the way they conduct their business and the trust in the relationship we’ve established,” he said.

Symphony said it’s planning to start migrating its communications platform and each of its clients to Google Cloud in the fourth quarter. The company admitted it will be a complex transition but expressed confidence in its ability to complete it in a one-year time frame.

“Symphony, Google Cloud and each financial firm will work closely to ensure the success of each migration,” said Symphony CIO Dietmar Fauser.

Last week, Google also announced a multiyear partnership with BCE Inc., better known as Bell Canada, to power its ongoing digital transformation and enhance its network and information technology infrastructure.
