Druva takes aim at ransomware with data protection across all cloud instances

When Amazon Web Services Inc.’s new Chief Executive Officer Adam Selipsky said this week that the company now offers more than 475 compute instances, it was clear that there is no shortage of options to serve any business in the cloud. But it was also clear that there is a very large environment to be managed and protected.

Securing data across disparate instances on AWS, as well as on-premises systems, is the value proposition of SaaS company Druva Inc. Its Data Resiliency Cloud enables customers to radically simplify data protection, streamline governance, and gain data visibility and insights as they accelerate cloud adoption, according to Stephen Manley (pictured, left), chief technology officer at Druva.

“Everybody right now is terrified of ransomware,” he said. “Druva, in combination with AWS, can actually help solve that ransomware challenge for you so that instead of thinking of it as ‘Do one [thing] and then you can do the cloud transformation,’ let’s put those two together.”

Manley and Jake Burns (pictured, right), enterprise strategist at AWS, spoke with David Nicholson, host of theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio, during AWS re:Invent. They discussed the growing value of data and its impact on the current state of data protection, the dual protection offered by Druva and AWS, and what Druva sees for the future. Overcoming the cultural barrier to the cloud

The biggest challenge of moving to the cloud is, for most companies, cultural rather than technological, according to Burns. It’s the old mindset that keeping critical applications at home is safer, although situations like the COVID-19 pandemic have shown the power of the cloud to deliver agility and scalability.

“We’ve gotten to a point where, and I’ve said this for a number of years, there’s never been a better time to move to cloud, but that just keeps being more and more true as time goes on as the technology gets more mature and as we have more and more examples of people who are very successful doing it,” Burns said.

Druva’s comprehensive solutions, designed from the ground up for AWS and set to secure all endpoints, cater to these fearful customers, according to Manley.

“It’s just one simple cost: How much data are you storing? That’s it,” Manley explained. “All the things happening in the background we take care of, and we take care of because we have AWS helping us design and implement this the best possible way.”
