As the technology world shifts toward a balanced multicloud ecosystem, organizations and end users are embracing innovations, such as generative artificial intelligence and private cloud, while navigating the complexities of data management and cross-cloud operations.

During this evolution, VMware Inc. has been at the forefront of innovation, leading the way with evolving technology in enterprise computing, virtualization and multicloud solutions, according to Sumit Dhawan (pictured), president of VMware. From shaping enterprise computing with virtualization and software-defined data centers to the introduction of multicloud — or what it calls cross-cloud — and supercloud, the company has been a significant driver in the industry. Efficiency and simplicity are core to its strategy.

“Focus is important in our industry — there are too many shiny balls we can touch,” Dhawan said. “We stay core to infrastructure, and we stay core to multicloud. And we just follow where the applications take the multicloud. Generative AI is the new workload, so we are extending the infrastructure towards it. And we are actually happy that that’s the North Star that Broadcom sees as well.”

Dhawan spoke with industry analysts Dave Vellante and John Furrier at VMware Explore 2023, during an exclusive broadcast on theCUBE, SiliconANGLE Media’s livestreaming studio. They discussed the integration of generative AI, the maturity curve of cloud adoption and the changing dynamics within the ever-evolving tech community. (* Disclosure below.)

Generative AI and multicloud portfolio

Gen AI, a concept VMware is embracing with enthusiasm, is a central theme at VMware Explore. The company is both excited and cautious about the technology, according to Dhawan. This approach is consistent with VMware’s strategy, where the focus is on integrating AI and pushing forward the multicloud portfolio.

“I truly believe that for enterprises, this private AI concept is going to be important,” Dhawan said. “And private AI doesn’t necessarily mean on-premise, but because a lot of the data is on-premise, I believe it will lead to a stronger usage, adoption and growth of private cloud.”

Dhawan further highlighted the growing maturity in multicloud, underscoring VMware’s commitment to providing a balanced operating model across clouds. A defining characteristic of the company’s success has been the community’s growth with the company.

“We’ve sort of taken these same people who started with just virtualization, some of them have grown their careers now to be able to handle … storage, networking and full enterprise computing,” Dhawan said. “Now we are taking them to the multicloud. It’s exciting to see how the community has grown with VMware.”
